I played this trumpet almost exclusively throughout my prior professional career. I understand it was originally owned by Nelson Hatt. My cousin, Charley Davis, arranged for me to buy it in 1981 when I was still in college at the Cincinnati Conservatory. The bell and leadpipe were changed out from Nelson’s original horn when I bought it. I studied with William Adam at the Indiana University School of Music, as well as with Frank Brown at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. I played this horn almost all of my professional career. I played it on the lead trumpet book for nearly 2 years on the Buddy Rich Band. I played it as the lead trumpet player of the Las Vegas Hilton showroom orchestra for several years. In 1981 it was originally in brass - lacquer. I have had it in raw brass, 2 silver plates and now gold-plated since then. I also played lead trumpet on it with Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Natalie Cole, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer, Gladys Knight and many others. When I once practiced with Jerry Hey, and he played the trumpet, both he and Charley thought it might actually be a 2 leadpipe, not a 7, perhaps it was something in the switch from Nelson to me. It makes no difference, I love this horn; it has a full, bright sound that sounds great live and prints well on the microphone. I have had many other trumpets that I like very well. My career was on this Calicchio.
