John Thomas
John Thomas was born in Fort Worth,Texas in 1950. He comes from a very musical family; his father Don, is a great trumpet player residing in Arlington, Texas and his brother, Richard, played for many years before an early musical retirement. John's Grandfather, Richard Guttman, was an accomplished pianist in Texas and his Great Grandmother Julia Guttman taught piano and composition at the Vienna Conservatory, she was also the accompanist for the celebrated violinist Fritz Kreisler in the early 1900s.
Since 1973 John has resided in Los Angeles, touring and or recording as first trumpet for: Count Basie, Chick Corea, Woody Herman, Louie Bellson, Bob Florence, Mike Barone, Don Ellis, Toshiko Akioshi, Matt Cattingub, BB King, Ray Charles, Bill Holman, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr., Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Joe Williams, The Great American Jazz Orchestra, Gerald Wilson, Cheryl Crow, George Duke, Dionne Warwick, David Sanborn, The Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra, Bobby Caldwell, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello and many others. You can hear John on many television series and motion pictures including the current movie "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood".
John holds degrees from the University of North Texas and The University of Southern California and is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern California. John Thomas is proud to be an artist and clinician for Calicchio, his favorite horn since 1971. "The Calicchio lets the music in me come out".
