Tony Farrell
Tony Farrell first started his relationship with Calicchio in 1965, at the age of 15. At that time he was studying with Zeke Zarchy, who was playing 1st trumpet at CBS. Zeke had always played Calicchio trumpets and when Tony was going to get himself a new trumpet, Zeke suggested that he get himself a custom made Calicchio. He took Tony to the shop in Hollywood where he met Domenick for the first time. Zeke completely oversaw the making of the trumpet with Domenick and told him what specs he wanted it to be. When it was first assembled, they took it to CBS where Zeke was playing the Jonathan Winters Show. It was during a rehearsal for that show that the entire section took turns playing the new trumpet. Those great players in that section along with Zeke Zarchy, were Uan Rasey, Ray Triscari and Jimmy Salko. After they had played it the first time, they all said the same thing. It played a little "stuffy"! So the next day it was back to Domenick to make a few minor changes on it. Then the following week they went back to CBS. Everyone played it again and this time they all loved it. This was the model 2-2 (S/N1892).
Tony played this trumpet for 35 years working with such credits as: The Don Ellis Orch, Stan Kenton Orch, Ray Charles Orch, Tommy Vig, Sammy Nestico, Louie Bellson, Ladd McIntosh, Rob McConnell, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Steve Allen, Frankie Avalon, Danny Gans, Ray Anthony, The Jimmy Dorsey Orch, The Modernaires, Alvino Rey, The King Sisters and The Beach Boys. He moved to Las Vegas where he played shows such as: The Folies Bergere, The Lido de Paris, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Andy Williams, Mitzi Gaynor, Jerry Lewis, Shirley Bassey, Lena Horne, Vic Damone, Shirley MacLaine, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Kim Sisters and The Mickey Finn Show. He also worked with the Sy Zentner, Bobby Sherwood and Nelson Riddle Orchestras. Then he went to Reno and played lead trumpet at the Reno Hilton for 2 years, playing more shows such as: Bal du Moulin Rouge, The Penthouse Pet Revue, The Fifth Dimension, Dick Shawn, Abbe Lane, Red Buttons and Sandler and Young.
Back to Los Angeles, Tony has played on numerous recordings, TV shows, movies, cartoons and live shows including: Inspector Gadget, The Gummy Bears, The Littles, The Mighty Orbots, The Get Along Gang, Going Bananas, Remington Steele, Barnaby Jones, American Ninja, The Philadelphia Experiment, Friday the 13th V & VI, House I & II, Creature, Deepstar Six and Xanadu. He was featured on the classic "Why Me God?(EFBM) by Dick Shreve. Pantages Theater" "Music Man" with Dick Van Dyke and played lead trumpet with Andy Williams for 3 years.
In 2000 (after 35 years), Tony finally got a new Calicchio from Chris and Irma the model R32 (S/N6588), which is what he currently plays today.
