Raymond J. Poncin
Ray Poncin is a very busy guy on the salsa scene in the L.A.
area. A multi-talented player, conductor and arranger, he has toured the
States and Europe, having received a standing ovation at the Montreux Jazz
Festival, for conducting his transcription of Pat Williams' "And On The
Sixth Day". Versatility is one of the hallmarks that keeps Ray in demand for
all types of work from Salsa to shows. He has performed with such artists as
Tito Puente, Tito Nieves, Tavares, Ray De La Paz, Yari More', Lil' Willie G
and Thee Midniters, the Friends Of Distinction, the Nation of Aztlan, Tierra
(featuring Stave Salas), Azteca, The Drifters, The Delfonics, The Intruders,
Eddie Mekka (Carmine 'The Big Ragu' Ragusa from TV's Laverne and Shirley)
and Bobby Rodriquez. He can be found regularly performing with Joe Bataan,
Henry Mora and his 23 piece Salsa Orchestra and the Opa Opa Salsa Orchestra.
Ray owes much of his success to many hours of dedicated practice
and the fine counsel of some of the finest teachers on the west coast,
including Ollie Mitchell, Ron Ossa, Claude Gordon, Uan Rasey and Charley
Davis.
Ray's arsenal includes a 1s/9L, a 3/10, piccolo trumpet and a copper
flugelhorn.
