Mike Williams is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and now resides outside
Detroit, MI. He has been the lead trumpet player the Count Basie Orchestra
for 21 years. For 18 of those years he has been a Calicchio clinician and
soloist across the United States. He also performs as a freelance musician
in the Detroit area. While with the Basie Band, he has performed in all 50
states and 40 countries with such notable names as Dizzy Gillespie, Billy
Eckstine, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Tony Bennett.
He and John Duda have developed a monster horn over the last year. Mike's horn has an S1s bell with a 5" diameter. The dead bell pushes more sound out of the bell, giving him a rich, fat sound. The Williams model is a large bore horn with a medium large tuning slide and a 3 leadpipe.
You can hear this horn on the new Basie band Christmas album featuring Tony Bennett. Another must-have CD is Excalibur, one of Steve Wiest's fine albums.
Watch for his new website to go live in the near future!
