Yaure Muniz
Yaure Muniz Rumayor was born in 1973 in Havana, Cuba. He grew up in an artistic family: his grandmother was a well-known Cuban clothes designer; his mother was a modern dancer in the national company; his father is a musician, composer, arranger, and conductor who got his start in the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna alongside Chucho Valdez, Paquito D'Rivera, Guajiro Mirabal, Jorge Varona, Arturo Sandoval, and Carlos del Puerto; and his sister is a singer in the Tropicana Cabaret.
When Yaure turned five, his father, Demetrio, gave him a plastic trumpet. It was one of the most memorable moments in Yaure's childhood. He accompanied Demetrio to rehearsals after that, sitting and playing beside Guajiro Mirabal and Adalberto Lara Trompetica. Yaure's first performance on his plastic trumpet took place when the Orquesta Cubana accompanied the Russian Circus.
During Yaure's early musical studies at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory he actively participated in festivals with various groups. He spent two years of mandatory military service playing in the military band, but escaped each night to perform in the Cabaret National and Tropicana. Following military service, Yaure became a regular member of the Tropicana Orchestra, joining old friends Guajiro Mirabal and Luis Alemany.
Playing with Mirabal and Alemany was vital to Yaure's musical education. The former, a man of few words, taught Yaure how to improvise and how to be a good session trumpeter and partner. Alemany, the consummate story teller, taught him how to express every thought in words and actions. Both of these masters modeled the necessity of respecting the musicians in ones team and working as a unified force.
While working at the Tropicana Cabaret, Yaure toured with a salsa and Latin Jazz band, Klimax. This launched him on an international performance career with the leading names in Latin music. After Klimax Yaure performed with the Afro-Cuban All Stars under the direction of Juan de Marco Gonzalez, followed by Cubanismo led by Jesus Alemany, and finally The Buena Vista Social Club featuring Cachaito and then Ibrahim Ferrer.
Yaure has been a recording artist on both the trumpet and flugelhorn inside and outside of Cuba since 1997. He continues to perform and record in Madrid where he has lived for the last year. In March he begins a European tour with renown percussionist Miguel "Anga" Diaz. Yaure plays an R32 trumpet and is an enthusiastic fan of Calcicchio products!
